Marchesi, Milan

Travel Notes….Marchesi, Milan

They recently opened up a new Marchesi cafe in the Galleria above the Prada mens store. It’s the perfect place to stop and have an espresso macchiato while watching the crowds below. This time of the year is especially great as they have beautiful gifts I can bring back to friends in New York for the holidays.

Window Shopping, Milan

Travel Notes…Window Shopping, Milan

“When I’m in just about any city I love to go window shopping. This is more true when I’m in Milan, than just about anywhere else in the world.

I love the little vintage jewelry stores of the city that display their antique gems so beautifully, sometimes in their original boxes. I love the attention to detail that you see in these early examples of packaging.”

Capodimonte Museum, Naples

Travel Notes…Capodimonte Museum, Naples

This was a lovely museum that I stumbled upon recently while in Naples. Although it was quite the hike from my hotel (The Grand Hotel Vesuvio), it was well worth it once I finally arrived. Their are many beautiful paintings inside this museum which is situated inside of a park. This painting I discovered on my last visit to the Museum, was painted by Tiziano Vecellio in 1543.

Caffe Greco, Rome

My Favorite Iced Coffee, Rome

*This sort of Iced Coffee presentation is somewhat of a rarity in America, I would say.

I love stopping in the beautiful and very grand Caffe Greco, near the Spanish Steps, when I am in Rome. It was over the summer that I discovered their iced coffee and their equally chic way of serving it in a beautiful stemmed glass.

Villa San Michele, Fiesole

Travel Notes…Villa San Michele, Fiesole

Nestled on the hills above Florence is the most beautiful and hidden getaway of a hotel.

I was able to stay at the Villa San Michele for a few days this summer when I took my two daughters on their first real trip to Italy.
The hotel itself is a converted Renaissance monastery and the views of Florence from the gardens of this hotel are unparalleled.

Palazzo Mirto, Palermo

Palazzo Mirto, Palermo

This summer was the first time I traveled to Sicily and I loved it.

The best place I saw in our first city was the Palazzo Mirto. It was grand (and a little unkept around the edges), but beautiful elements such as the wallpaper and the decorations such as the vases, brought to life a time when people lived with such grandeur.

The view from the Boboli Gardens…one of the best views in all of Florence.

Passamanerie Shop, Florence

Travel Notes…Passamanerie Shop, Florence

I love stopping by this trimming store when I’m in Florence.

Passamaneria Valmar is a tiny shop absolutely filled to the brim with tassels and trimmings. I don’t know what I would actually make with any of these beautiful little things, but I love the idea of them, all the same.

Picasso Museum, Paris

Travel Notes….Picasso Museum, Paris

The Picasso Museum itself is as beautiful as the paintings and drawings that line its walls.

Tucked away in the Marais district of Paris on Rue de Thorigny, I love stopping by when I’m in Paris.

Courtyard Gates of Milan

On the Street…Courtyard Gates of Milan

I love the intricate gates you see as you walk along the streets of Milan.

There is something surprising and wonderful about immediately being confronted with such beauty.

On the Street…Piazza Affari, Milan

It felt like Spring in Milan earlier this month and as we know, love blossoms in the Spring..

Behind the scenes shooting in the all white sneakers I designed for this upcoming season with Sutor Mantellassi. Even when I have a full day of shooting ahead, I love wearing these sneakers we worked on together. They’re comfortable, crisp, and clean, and go with my daily “uniform” of my navy cashmere jacket and dark wash denim jeans

The very stylish Gabriele Verratti on the last day of Milan Fashion Week.

What I love about this green derby shoe that we did for the Fall 2016 collection, is that they are subtly chic in a way that doesn’t overly stand out or scream “fashion”. The color is subtle enough that it can easily and beautifully work well within an outfit, without overpowering it.

“Shooting in My Sneakers…Piazza del Duomo, Milan”

When I designed this sneaker for Sutor Mantellassi my most important goal was to create a real sneaker that I could wear when I am outside shooting and working.

I didnt want to make a designer sneaker, but a real sneaker that I could wear everywhere. So I was very happy when the first shooting project I did after fashion week I was able to wear the sneaker and it worked so perfectly.

Via Valtellina, Milan

“On the Street…Via Valtellina, Milan”

I was thrilled when I saw my friend Gianluca wearing one of the pairs of shoes I designed for Sutor Mantellassi.

I designed these shoes in a selfish way for me, so it’s satisfying to see it works on other guys who have very high standards of style and design.

“On the Street…Good Night Sweet Prince”

“I think I could do a whole series on people I see at the $1 book carts outside Strand store.

This gentlemen was looking at a copy of “Good Night, Sweet Prince.” What a perfect book for this aristocrat young man who looks like he just finished ballet rehearsal.

Bookstores are such a great place to find stylish people because I’ve found that a common trait of very stylish people is curiosity, and what better place to find curious people than a bookstore! McNally Jackson, Strand and Rizzoli are some of my most successful hunting grounds.”

Varanasi, India

Varanasi, India

“One of the things I love the most about street photography is that it requires patience, often hours of it, with little hope of success. However the fact that at any given moment you could take the best photo of your career is the thing that keeps most photographers on the hunt.

I took this photo on the last full shooting day of an exhausting but very rewarding two week trip to India. I was on the edge of Varanasi, hot, sweaty, and trying to convince myself it was ok to go back to the hotel a little early. I gave myself five more blocks before I’d jump on a rickshaw back to the hotel. But when I turned the very next corner I stumbled upon this open air coal pit with this beautiful young man covered in coal dust, dressed in all black and with a haircut worthy of Guido Palau. It was a scene as gritty and beautiful as a Dickens tale.

Just like that, my energy was back.
